NMWater Lab (Nano-Membrane Water Research Laboratory) is a specialized research facility dedicated to developing advanced, sustainable, and intelligent technologies for water and industrial wastewater treatment. The laboratory is being strengthened through research funding from the HEAT Project under the University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh, with support from the World Bank. machine learning, resource recovery, and circular-economy approaches, supporting innovative, scalable solutions for cleaner industrial production.

Integrating Machine Learning with Nano-Enabled Membrane Filtration for Sustainable Industrial Wastewater Management

This sub-project aims to develop an innovative, intelligent, and sustainable wastewater treatment system for Bangladesh’s textile industry by integrating machine learning (ML), nano-enabled membrane filtration, and resource recovery within a circular economy framework. The proposed system is designed to enhance pollutant removal, support compliance with Bangladesh’s Environmental Conservation Rules (2023), enable approximately 40% water reuse, and provide a scalable pathway toward industrial application, technology transfer, and commercialization.

NMWater Lab brings together membrane science, nanotechnology, machine learning, wastewater treatment, and circular-economy principles to address emerging challenges in industrial water management. A major research focus is the development of nano-enabled and nanocomposite membrane filtration systems with improved pollutant removal, filtration performance, and operational efficiency. Machine-learning approaches are incorporated to optimize membrane and process parameters and facilitate pilot- and industrial-scale implementation. Current research includes converting textile solid sludge into granular activated carbon (GAC) and integrating GAC adsorption with advanced membrane filtration. These approaches aim to transform industrial wastes into useful treatment materials while reducing pollution and treatment costs.

Through laboratory research, pilot-scale demonstration, industry–academia collaboration, capacity building, and technology transfer, NMWater Lab seeks to develop practical and scalable solutions for Bangladesh’s textile and other water-intensive industries. Its broader vision is to contribute to water reuse, cleaner production, resource efficiency, environmental compliance, and a circular economy, while creating opportunities for innovation, commercialization, and sustainable industrial development.
